When will Hesse finally open?

The political decisions taken by Hesse´s state government are very hard to understand considering the current state of the Covid-19 pandemic not just in Hesse but the whole of Germany. It was quite reasonable for the to wait for the (possible) effect on new infections after loosening some restrictions on May 15th– but those effects would never come. The infection rates are still low as the results have started to come through on May 25th.

Just take a look at the recent numbers, that were released by the Robert-Koch- Institute on June 6th midnight:

  • Active infections (Germany): ca. 6.132
  • Infections in the past 7 days (Germany): 2.160
  • Infections in the past 7 days (Hesse): 141
  • Covid-19 patients in intensive care (Germany): 576
  • Free (registered) intensive care beds (Germany): 11.538
  • Diseased with Covid-19 (Germany): 8.646
  • Diseased with Covid-19 (Hesse): 483
  • Average age of diseased (Germany): 81 years
  • Average age life expectancy (Germany): 80,9 years
  • Population (Germany): ca. 83.000.000 (83 million)*
  • Population (Hesse): ca. 6.266.000 (6,266 million)*
  • Estimated reproduction number: 0,87

The following stats are taken from Hesse´s health care minister Klose press conference on Wednesday, June 3rd:

  • Hospitalized patients with Covid-19 infection (Hesse): 417
  • Ventilated patients with Covid-19 (Hesse): 72
  • Free hospital beds (Hesse): 10.852
  • Free ventilators (Hesse): 851

The intensive care units can be expanded if needed. Our state government still decided to extend the contact restrictions until July 5th although the numbers are low and our health care systems is nowhere near to collapse. Even Frankfurt´s virologist Martin Stürmer was surprised with the decision, which seems even stranger considering German´s government decision to only extend the regulations until June 29th. It is very hard to understand why we are still being stripped of essential rights, but one thing is for sure: we will fight through this absurd situation: together!

Thank you for reading and I hope to welcoming you healthy at MMA Spirit.

Yours Niels
