How do we want to spend our lives?

Dear friends and members of MMA Spirit,

The following blog will review a couple of ideas and more so questions regarding humanity´s idea of spending their lives as this particular question has come even more into focus with the restriction of our constitutional rights during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Any crisis respectively the reaction towards it, is mind-made and our lives consist of permanent (aware and unaware) decision making while contemplating the risk and reward. The fundus of these decisions is deeply connected with the thought of Enlightenment as Immanuel Kant has once said in 1784:

“Enlightenment is man´s exit from his self-inflicted immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use one´s mind without the guidance of others:”

Any enlightened person would therefore need to have the ability to carefully consider statements, situations, threats but also chances by disconnecting them from their origin.

We have multiple sources from various media, institutions as much as our personal experience at our disposal and its quite some task to find out which ones are true, but the question is if we need to know the exact truth in order to make decisions. One fact though is undeniable as we will soon or later die- which leads us to the question how we wish to live and eventually die.

I totally agree with the head of the German Bundestag Wolfgang Schäuble, who stated at the end April: “If there is a definite value in our constitution it would have to be a man´s dignity. It is untouchable. But that won´t keep us from dying.”

The past couple of weeks have made me consider a lot of questions, which I would like to share with you:

  • How do people in nursing homes feel considering the visitors and contact restrictions, having not been able to meet their loved ones face to face for weeks and months?
  • How do patients in hospitals feel, who are dying lonesome due to quarantine?
  • Why are we allowed to smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol, knowing that they do harm our health and put pressure on the health care system, which is (now) not supposed to be put under pressure? Does this relate to the huge tax income through these industries?
  • Why don´t we abandon traffic, although 396.018 people have been injured and 3.275 have died in 2019? Is it because we consider the risks and reward?
  • Why is industrial sugar still allowed and even subsidized although it is highly supporting cancer disease (227.600 people died of cancer in 2019/in Germany)?
  • How is it possible to meet people from a different household without having to keep a minimum distance of 150cm and for as long as one wants, but not possible to do mitts training, roll or wrestle?
  • Why have we taken away kids shelters, which are their only places to escape circumstances within their families?
  • How is it possible that professional football players can practice without contact restrictions, although there is an incubation period of 14 days and players are only tested 3 times a week and are not living in quarantine, but other professional athletes can´t do the same?
  • Why do politics not consider the huge stress and higher risk of diseases such as suicide, alcoholism, violence and heart attacks caused by the restrictions and/or the consequences of those?
  • Why don´t we have clear schemes regarding the future of all business in every German state?
  • Why don´t we have better protection in place for retirement homes and hospitals as much as more testing available/in use?
  • Why did the Robert-Koch-Institute spoke out against obductions and masks for many weeks?
  • What are we going to do if the (a more lethal) virus returns- will we shelter again or for much longer and start to only live to survive? Is a worth living to survive worth living?
  • Why can´t we decide by ourselves how many risks we are willing to take when everyone knows about the risks and how to protect themselves if they wish to do so?
  • Is the current (May 22nd 2020) risk analyses of the Robert-Koch-Institute, that the general health of Germany´s population is under serious (high) threat, correct considering the following numbers?
  • 10.038 active infections, with 460 new infections within the last 24 hours
  • 965 Covid-19 contracted patients in intensive-care units with 12.190 unoccupied beds
  • Total number of deaths in relation to Covid-19: 8174
  • Average age of diseased people: 81 years
  • Average life expectancy: 80,9 years
  • Total population Germany: ca. 83,02 million
  • Total population Hesse: ca. 6,26 million

Please don´t get me wrong as I can´t stop to repeat myself: Every diseased or sick person is tragic for those involved, but this doesn´t only relate to Covid-19, but to any disease, either contagious or not. I really hope that people will soon be able to make their own decisions sooner than later. Thank you for reading and I hope to meet you healthy at MMA Spirit 😊
